About Panjab University

The University is as old as independent India, having been established in 1947. The name ‘Panjab’ is also the old British spelling of Punjab.

The present-day Panjab University traces its roots to the University of the Punjab established in 1882 at Lahore, Pakistan.

Post independence, the University was also bifurcated, with the spelling of the name of the Indian university being later changed to ‘Panjab’ – to differentiate it from its Lahore counterpart.

Panjab University is considered to be one of the premier educational institutions in India and features among the top universities in various ranking lists.

PU LLM Program 2021 and 2022

The basic eligibility for the LLM programs at Panjab University is a BCI recognized LLB degree (3 years or 5 years), with a minimum of 55% marks (50% in case of SC/ST/BC/PwD candidates).

The official notification mentions that candidates who have completed any equivalent examination of another University recognized by the Syndicate for this purpose are also eligible. This might be the non-professional Bachelors Degree programs in Law, offered by a few Universities in regular or distance mode.*

In case of any questions, candidates should reach out to the official university help desk to confirm the eligibility of their degree for the LLM program admissions.

* Once BCI’s new education policy rules are implemented, the minimum eligibility for LLM programs will be an LLB. Masters in Law programs may continue to admit graduates from other non-LLB law programs. (e.g., BL)

Selection process for Panjab University LLM programs

Subject to meeting the minimum eligibility criteria, a merit list will be published – with 80% weightage given to the CET scores and 20% weightage for previous academics (LLB marks).

Admission offers will be rolled out on the basis of the merit list, with seats remaining after the first list rolling on to the second and third lists.

In case of two or more candidates scoring identical ranks in the merit list, the following parameters will be used for ‘inter se’ ranking. (In the order as listed below) :

  • Higher marks in the LLB degree will get preference
  • Higher percentage in the 12th (10+2) exam will get preference
  • Higher age will get preference
