About Panjab University
The University is as old as independent India, having been established in 1947. The name ‘Panjab’ is also the old British spelling of Punjab.
The present-day Panjab University traces its roots to the University of the Punjab established in 1882 at Lahore, Pakistan.
Post independence, the University was also bifurcated, with the spelling of the name of the Indian university being later changed to ‘Panjab’ – to differentiate it from its Lahore counterpart.
Panjab University is considered to be one of the premier educational institutions in India and features among the top universities in various ranking lists.
PU LLM Program 2024 and 2025
Panjab University offers four categories of LLM programs, with around 178 seats in total.
- LL.M. (One-Year Course) (Semester System) at the Department of Laws, P.U., Chandigarh.
- LL.M. (One-Year Course) (Semester System) (Self Financing Course) at the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS), P.U., Chandigarh
- LL.M. (2-Year Course) (Semester System)(Self Financing Course) at the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS), P.U., Chandigarh
- LL.M. (2-Year Course) at the UIL, Panjab University Regional Centre, Ludhiana

Admissions for all of the above LLM programs for 2024 and 2025 will be through the PU CET PG – Panjab University Common Entrance Test for Post Graduate Programs.
A weightage of 80% will be given to the PU CET PG score and 20% to prior academics, i.e. LLB marks.
Panjab University LLM Eligibility
The basic eligibility for the LLM programs at Panjab University is a BCI recognized LLB degree (3 years or 5 years), with a minimum of 55% marks (50% in case of SC/ST/BC/PwD candidates).
The official notification mentions that candidates who have completed any equivalent examination of another University recognized by the Syndicate for this purpose are also eligible. This might be the non-professional Bachelors Degree programs in Law, offered by a few Universities in regular or distance mode.*
In case of any questions, candidates should reach out to the official university help desk to confirm the eligibility of their degree for the LLM program admissions.
* Once BCI’s new education policy rules are implemented, the minimum eligibility for LLM programs will be an LLB. Masters in Law programs may continue to admit graduates from other non-LLB law programs. (e.g., BL)
Selection process for Panjab University LLM programs
All interested candidates need to take up the PU CET PG 2024 and 2025 entrance exam.
Subject to meeting the minimum eligibility criteria, a merit list will be published – with 80% weightage given to the CET scores and 20% weightage for previous academics (LLB marks).
Admission offers will be rolled out on the basis of the merit list, with seats remaining after the first list rolling on to the second and third lists.
In case of two or more candidates scoring identical ranks in the merit list, the following parameters will be used for ‘inter se’ ranking. (In the order as listed below) :
- Higher marks in the LLB degree will get preference
- Higher percentage in the 12th (10+2) exam will get preference
- Higher age will get preference
Panjab University LLM Entrance – PU CET PG LLM 2024 and 2025 Syllabus
The overall syllabus of the PU CET PG LLM program will be based on the standard BCI prescribed LLB course; with MCQs derived from the following subjects:
- Constitution Law, Public Law, Administrative Law, Service Law, Environmental Law and Human Rights – 20 MCQ (1 Mark Each)
- Criminal Law – 20 MCQ (1 Mark Each)
- Civil Laws – 20 MCQ (1 Mark Each)
- Commercial Law – 20 MCQ (1 Mark Each)
- RTI, IPR & Cyber Laws – 20 MCQ (1 Mark Each)
PU CET PG LLM 2024 and 2025 question paper pattern
- The overall PU CET PG LLM 2024 and 2025 question paper will be for 100 marks.
- There will be 100 MCQs, as per the subject-wise break up mentioned in this article.
- The entire paper needs to be completed within 90 minutes. (1 hour 30 minutes).
- 1 Mark will be awarded for every correct answer
- 0.25 marks will be deducted for every incorrect answer (Negative marking)
- No negative marking for unanswered questions
- The Entrance Test shall be in English only
- The exam will be held in a physical mode at the specified test centers

How many students apply for the PU CET PG LLM entrance 2024 and 2025?
Considering the popularity and the reputation of the University, there is a significant degree of competition for the LLM programs at Panjab University.
On an average, 1200 ~ 1500 candidates may apply for the 2024 and 2025 academic season.
