Merchant shipping is the lifeblood of the world’s economy, supporting around 90% of Global International Trade. There are over 100,000 commercial ocean going ships worldwide. A country’s commercial shipping fleet is usually referred to as the ‘Merchant Navy’. In addition to sea shipping, there are also a large number of Inland Shipping vessels, which run on rivers, lakes and canals, offering the most economical mode for carrying bulk cargo.
Merchant shipping or Maritime Law is a relatively complex field, since there can be multiple jurisdictions and legal processes. A ship can be owned by one country, carry a flag of another country , travel between a bevy of other countries across the world , while being operated by an International crew.
Maritime law covers a wide range of subjects like carriage of cargo and passengers, marine pollution liabilities, freezing injunctions, ship & crew seizure or arrests, towing contracts, limitation of liabilities, maritime liens, salvage, collision liabilities and commercial arbitration.
Indian Lawyers and Law firms are slowly making inroads into the field of Maritime Law which has been traditionally dominated by foreign firms. Thus, an LLM in Maritime Law program would be ideal for students and professionals aiming to specialize in this interesting and lucrative field of law.
GMU also offers an LLM program with specialization in International Trade Law. Read more about it here : Gujarat Maritime University LLM in International Trade Law
