Eligibility and Age Limit – 2024 and 2025 Himachal Pradesh Judicial Service Exam Civil Judge (Junior Division)
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
a) As on the specific date mentioned in the advertisement for the year, a candidate must be a holder of degree in Law (LLB) recognized by the Bar Council of India.
b) The candidate must be a citizen of India.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION
The knowledge of customs, manners and dialects of Himachal Pradesh and suitability for appointment in the peculiar conditions prevailing in the State of Himachal Pradesh.
AGE LIMIT
A candidate must have attained the age of 22 years but must not be more than 30 years of age as on the last date prescribed for receipt of applications.
RELAXATION IN UPPER AGE LIMIT
The upper age limit is relaxable by 03 years for S.C. / S.T. and other prescribed reserved categories (OPRC) candidates of Himachal Pradesh.
Scheme & Syllabus of the Himachal Pradesh Judicial Service Exam 2024 and 2025
(1) Preliminary (Objective) Exam
(2) Main – Narrative – Written Exam
(3) Viva voce – Personal Interview
Civil Judge Junior Division – Preliminary (Objective) Exam Syllabus – 2024 and 2025
The preliminary examination shall be an objective type examination consisting of the following three papers of 100 Marks each
1. Civil Law-I
2. Civil Law-II
3. Criminal Law
Each paper shall be of one-hour duration and the examination in all the three papers shall be held on the same day. The syllabus for the preliminary examination shall be the same as provided for Papers I to III for the Main examination. (See the details below).
Civil Judge Junior Division Main (Narrative) Exam Syllabus – 2024 and 2025
Each paper will last for three hours. The subject and syllabus for main(narrative) examination and marks for each paper shall be as follows
PAPER-I Civil Law-I – 200 Marks
- Code of Civil Procedure.
- Indian Evidence Act,
- Indian Stamp Act,
- Himachal Pradesh Courts Act, 1976
- Specific Relief Act.
PAPER-II Civil Law-II – 200 Marks
- Indian Contract Act
- Hindu Law
- Indian Limitation Act
- Transfer of Property Act
- H.P. Urban Rent Control Act.
PAPER-III Criminal Law – 200 Marks
- Indian Penal Code,
- Criminal Procedure Code,
- Chapter-XVII (section 138 to 143) of the Negotiable Instruments Act,
- H.P. Excise Act-2011 as Applicable to the State of H.P.,
- Wild Life Protection Act and Indian Forest Act.
PAPER-IV English Composition (150 marks, as per the break-up given below)
- One essay, from among a Choice from three Essays on General Subjects. – 100 marks
- Translation of Hindi Passage into English: 50 Marks
(The standard for the English paper shall be that of graduation examination of Himachal Pradesh University.)
PAPER-V Language (Hindi) : Hindi (in Devanagri Script) No books prescribed. 100 marks
- Translation of English passage into Hindi.- 30 Marks
- Essay in Hindi on any topic out of three. – 50 Marks
- Composition (Idioms and Corrections etc.).- 20 Marks
(The standard for the language paper shall be that of Matriculation examination of Himachal Pradesh University.)

Viva-Voce (Interview)
(i) Candidates, who qualify the Himachal Pradesh Judicial Service Main written examination, will be required to appear at such place, as may be fixed by the Commission, for a viva-voce test. The maximum marks for the viva voce shall be 150. The marks obtained in the viva-voce will be added to the marks obtained in the Main written examination for purpose of selection of the candidates.
(ii) The summoning of the candidates for viva-voce test conveys no assurance whatsoever that they will be selected or recommended. Appointment orders to the selected candidates will be issued by the Government.
(iii) A candidate shall also be required to obtain at least 45% of the marks allocated for the interview, failing which he will be deemed to have not qualified the competitive examination.
Minimum Qualifying Marks
(i) No candidate shall be credited with any marks in any paper unless he obtains at least 40 percent marks in that paper, except Hindi language paper (paper-V) in which candidate should obtain at least 33 percent marks.
(ii) No candidate shall be considered to have qualified the written test unless he obtains 45 percent marks in aggregate in all papers and at least 33 percent marks in language paper i.e. Hindi in Devanagri script.
