Is the MP Civil Judge preliminary 2024 more important than the mains?

This statement may appear controversial; but, let us look at the numbers.

We analyzed the data from the 2018 and 2019 MP Civil Judge exam results and this is what we found :

2018 Results Analysis

  • Candidates who attempted the preliminary exam – 36500 (approx)
  • Candidates selected for the mains – 1383
  • Candidates eligible for interview – 474
  • Candidates who cleared the preliminary exam – 3.79 %
  • Candidates who cleared the main exam – 34.27 %

2019 Results Analysis

  • Candidates who attempted the preliminary exam – 30500 (approx)
  • Candidates selected for the mains – 1806
  • Candidates eligible for interview – 346
  • Candidates who cleared the preliminary exam – 5.92 %
  • Candidates who cleared the main exam – 19.16 %

As you can see, only around 4% – 6% candidates manage to score the 60% required to be eligible for shortlisting to take the main exam.

So, the fact that the prelims are probably more difficult than the mains is true not only for the MP Civil Judge exam; but also for the Judicial services exams of other states.

What about the 1:40 shortlisting from Preliminary to Main exam ?

As such, the shortlisting is supposed to happen in a 1:40 ratio – i.e. 40 eligible students will be shortlisted to take the mains for every advertised MP Civil Judge vacancy.

For example, if there are 100 Madhya Pradesh Civil Judge post vacancies, up to 4000 eligible candidates can be shortlisted for the main exam.

While the shortlisting is done on the basis of the Preliminary exam rank – students must have scored at least 60% in the preliminary exam (General) or 55 % (Reserved categories) to be eligible for the main exam.

As you can see from the data, the number of candidates selected for the mains is much less than the upper limit. This is because candidates could not reach the cut-off marks.

Your probability of clearing the MP Civil Judge mains is much higher than the Prelims !

Around 3.5% to 6% clear the MP Civil Judge preliminary exam. Whereas 20% to 35% of the candidates clear the mains and go to the interview round.

The mains are descriptive type – which gives you an opportunity to elaborate / give examples / stretch your answers.

The preliminary is more ‘binary’ in nature – you either know the answer or you don’t. If you don’t know the answer – you need to use a suitable strategy to guess the correct option.

Don’t underestimate or neglect the MP Civil Judge preliminary exam 2024

Many students assume that they can directly start preparing for the mains; and the preliminary exams will be taken care of automatically.

However, that will be an incorrect assumption – the prep strategy needs to be completely different for the prelims and the mains.

For the prelims, the best way to prepare is solve as many mock tests and previous question papers as possible. Mock tests covering the important areas of all the subjects.
