PSU Recruitment – CLAT PG 2018

Public Sector Units recruiting through the CLAT PG - BHEL, ONGC, GAIL, PGCIL, Indian Oil, NTPC, OIL

An icing on the cake for students appearing in the CLAT PG 2018 exam is that some of the PSUs (Public Sector Units) use CLAT PG scores for recruiting candidates for various legal roles.

Just to be clear, candidates who have completed their LLB can apply for these PSU roles; and the CLAT PG scores are used as one of the selection criteria. CLAT UG candidates are not eligible.

Apart from the cut-off marks announced in the CLAT PG 2018 scores, there will also be other qualifying and filtering processes for each organization, such as minimum marks in LLB, group discussions, and personal interviews.

While ONGC and PGCIL are recruiting fresh LLB graduates, BHEL requires candidates to have at least one year of experience as a Legal Officer in specified organizations.

As of 19th April 2018, three PSU have confirmed recruitment and released their official notifications, three other PSUs that have historically participated are yet to confirm. Links to official notifications are included at the end of this article.

Depending on the organization, the roles that are filled through the CLAT PG 2018 are Assistant Legal Advisor, Executive Trainee (Law), Law Officer (E1 Level) – which are junior executive roles within the Legal Service cadre.

Currently, there are 33 roles on offer between the three confirmed PSUs and the total number should touch 50.

Pay and Perks

Apart from the relative job security that is built into these PSU roles, they also come with good pay packages and a bouquet of additional perks.

For ONGC, the pay scale is in the grade of Rs. 60,000 – 1,80,000/- with an increment of 3% per year. Besides Basic Pay, the employee is entitled to allowance @ 35% of Basic Pay under Cafeteria Approach, Dearness Allowance, HRA/Company Accommodation, Contributory Provident Fund, Conveyance Maintenance, Substantial Performance Related Pay (PRP), Medical Facility for self and dependents, Gratuity, Post Retirement Benefit Scheme and Composite Social Security Scheme as per Company rules.

In Power Grid Corporation of India – Selected candidates will be placed in the pay scale of INR 24900-50500* during the one-year training period. The Corporation offers a very attractive pay package which is one of the best in the Industry. The approximate CTC (depending on location of posting & other factors) per annum are as follows:

  • During Training Rs. 9 lakhs
  • After Training On regularization Rs. 15 lakhs

On regularization, the Compensation package includes Basic Pay, Dearness Allowance, Perquisites and Allowance as per cafeteria approach, Performance Related Pay, Company Leased
Accommodation / Company Quarters or HRA, Reimbursement of monthly conveyance expenditure, mobile facility, Group Insurance, Personal Accident Insurance, PF, Gratuity, Pension & Leave encashment etc.

The Corporation also offers excellent facilities like Short and Long term Loans & Advances including House Building Advance, Medical facilities for self and dependents etc. in accordance with the policies of the Corporation from time to time.

In BHEL, the selected candidate would be initially placed at the minimum of Pay Scale of Rs 24,900-50,500/- , Industrial Dearness Allowance (Currently 126.9% of Basic Pay), Perks and other Allowances (up to a maximum of 46% of Basic Pay) and benefits such as Leave, Medical facilities for self and dependent family member, Provident Fund, Leave Encashment, Gratuity, Uniform, Subsidized Canteen Facilities, Company assisted accommodation or HRA etc. will be admissible as per Company Rules as applicable from time to time.

The age limit for most of these roles is usually between 28 years to 30 years, with relaxation for reserved category candidates.

General recruitment process
  • First eligibility filtration will be by way of minimum marks in the LLB degree
  • Some organizations (e.g. BHEL) may have a minimum  experience criteria
  • Depending on the overall CLAT performance for the year, a minimum cut-off may be specified
  • Candidates will be called for Interview and Group discussion in a decided ratio

Note : It is not mandatory that all these PSUs will recruit through the CLAT PG every year.
Depending on their requirements, some new PSUs may participate and some may decide to opt out.
