About NLSIU – National Law School of India University
National Law School of India University (NLSIU) is the first Indian University, established exclusively for legal studies and research.
The National Law School of India Act, 1986, passed by Karnataka Legislature, provided the statutory basis to this University. It became functional in 1988. Sponsored by the Bar Council of India, NLSIU represents the unique partnership between and among the Bar, Bench and Academia. Eminent judges and leading lawyers have been associating with the Law School working side by side with a committed band of academicians.
As usual, NLS has consistently retained the “Rank No. 1” in the rankings by India Today, The Week, Outlook, Careers360 and Education World. NLUIU students have excelled in curricular and co-curricular activities, distinguishing themselves in National and International Moot Court Competitions, Debate, etc.

Thanks to the initiative taken by the alumni and in keeping with the avowed policy of NLSIU that no student will be deprived of the benefits for want of Rupee considerations, a New Scholarship Policy has been in place and an amount of Rs. 36,52,000/- were disbursed to the needy students.
LL.M. (Master of Laws) Degree Program through CLAT LLM Entrance
NLSIU offers One-Year LL.M. Degree programme in two distinct and separate Branches of specialization:
(i) BUSINESS LAWS and
(ii) HUMAN RIGHTS LAWS.
Candidates have an option to join either. The admission to the chosen branch will be however determined by the inter-se ranking at the CLAT ( CLAT PG ). Once admitted to a chosen branch, the admission is final and is not open to change.
LLM Course Structure
The LL.M. programme is based on the Trimester system. In each trimester four courses are offered for study. In all these subjects, national and international dimensions are properly highlighted. During the third and last trimester, students will be required to undergo writing dissertation.
Students will be required to undergo mandatory internships during the academic break between second and third trimester and also participate in the weekly seminar presentations. These two exercises are part of Curriculum.
LLM Eligibility – CLAT LLM Entrance
Admission for the LLM program will be through the CLAT PG Examination and eligibility will be as per the CLAT ( CLAT PG ) common rules.

Intake and Reservation for LL.M. Programme through CLAT PG
At present, the intake capacity of LL.M. Degree Programme shall be 50 (Fifty) with the following break-up:

- HUMAN RIGHTS LAWS – 15

Interested foreign students may apply directly to the University in the prescribed format available on the NLS Website along with the supporting documents to the Registrar, NLSIU, Nagarbhavi, Bangalore – 560 072, on or before the prescribed date. They will be admitted directly on the basis of their performance in the qualifying examination, overall academic record and command over English language. Preference will be given to the candidates from SAARC countries and other developing countries.

a) General Category – Rs. 1,89,500.00 p.a.
b) SC / ST Category – Rs. 1,86,375.00 p.a.
c) Foreign Nationals – US$ 5650 p.a.
Scholarships at NSLIU
The motto of NLSIU is that no one who secures admission to NLSIU shall discontinue studies on account of financial constraints. Keeping this in mind, the NLSIU will provide necessary financial assistance to the needy students. NLSIU has a vibrant Scholarship Policy to help the poor and the needy.
