One frequent question that we receive is about the syllabus for the upcoming CLAT PG 2022 exam.
What should students focus on? Should you read all the recent case judgements? Should you read all the landmark cases? How can you prepare for the upcoming CLAT PG 2022 LLM entrance exam?
In this article, we are going to discuss all of the above questions and more! Let us get started.
Analysis of the CLAT PG 2020 and CLAT PG 2021 Previous Question Papers and official syllabus
The CLAT consortium introduced the new pattern ‘comprehension’ based multiple choice questions from CLAT PG 2020.
Analyzing the CLAT LLM 2020 and 2021 question papers will help us understand the sourcing of the passages and the framing of the questions.
This analysis is useful as the syllabus for the CLAT PG 2022 exam is the same as it was for the 2020 and 2021.
Let us look at the following aspects :
- What is the official syllabus for the CLAT PG 2022 exam?
- Where were the passages for these exams sourced from?
- How were the questions framed?
- How many questions were based on the passages?
- Is there a way to predict the comprehension passage sources for CLAT PG 2022?
- What is the best way to prepare for the CLAT PG 2022 exam?
What is the official syllabus for the CLAT PG 2022?
As per the official notifications, the PG CLAT 2022 will emphasize on the comprehension abilities of the students.
The passages for the comprehension questions will be based on the BCI prescribed mandatory LLB subjects, such as :
- Constitutional Law,
- Jurisprudence,
- Administrative Law,
- Law of Contract,
- Torts,
- Family Law,
- Criminal Law,
- Property Law,
- Company Law,
- Public International Law,
- Tax Law,
- Environmental Law,
- Labor & Industrial Law.
Where were the comprehension passages for the previous CLAT PG LLM exams sourced from?
In 2020, the break-up of the sources for the 12 passages was as follows:
- Case judgement extracts – 6 (2020 – 3, 2019 – 1, 2017 – 2)
- Newspaper or website articles – 2
- Book extracts – 2
- Academic journal article – 1
- Generic paragraph – 1
In CLAT PG 2021, the source of the 20 passages was as below:
- Case judgement extracts – 18 (1973 – 1, 2006 – 1, 2013 – 1, 2016 -1, 2017 – 1, 2018 – 2, 2019 – 3, 2020 – 4, 2021 – 6)
- Extract from 2017 law commission report – 1
- Passage from a book / journal / article – 1
The above break-ups show that around 50% of the passages are based on the case judgments from the year of the exam.
The other passages can be from judgments of various previous years or other sources.
How will the questions be framed for CLAT PG 2022 ?
Based on analysis of the previous year question papers, we can see that there can be three types of questions for CLAT PG 2022 :
- Around 50% will be ‘Direct questions’ – the answers can be derived directly from the passage or even from the question / answer options itself
- Around 25% will be ‘Contextual questions’ – the answers are in the context of the passage, but cannot be answered directly
- The remaining 25% will be ‘Arbitrary’ – the questions are completely external; and will depend on your legal knowledge and general legal awareness
CLAT PG 2022 is termed as a comprehension based exam. But in reality, it will consist of a mix of comprehension and external MCQs.
The questions will be framed to test the following aspects:
- The ability to read and comprehend the issues discussed in the passage; and any arguments and viewpoints discussed there in;
- Your awareness of the legal issues discussed in the passage;
- Knowledge of the facts related to and arising out of the passage and the judgment or statute from which it is extracted;
- Your ability to analyze and summarize the passage; and
- Application of the knowledge of the fields of law discussed in the passage.
Is there a way to predict the comprehension passage sources for CLAT PG 2022?
Around half of the passages may be based on the important case judgments from the year of the exam. And there will be around 75 – 100 important cases per year.
Also, every judgement may be tens of pages in length.
So, it is quite difficult to (perhaps next to impossible), to precisely predict the source of the passages.
Even if the case can be predicted, it is impossible to specify from which part of the judgement the passage will be extracted.
Considering the above, we strongly recommend that students should prepare for the CLAT PG 2022 in a very generic manner.
The key to success is maximizing your scores in the direct questions; and using a good strategy to answer the indirect and external questions.
You should also be aware of the landmark cases of the exam year. Cases which touch upon the CLAT PG 2022 syllabus, i.e. the standard 3-year LLB syllabus.
