About PRS Legislative Research

PRS tracks the functioning of the Indian Parliament and works with MPs from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha across political parties and MLAs from various states. PRS provides a comprehensive and credible resource base to access Parliament-specific data, background information on Parliamentary and governance processes and analysis of key legislative and policy issues.

PRS Legislative Research (PRS) seeks to strengthen the legislative process by making it better informed, more transparent and participatory. Through its work, PRS seeks:

  • To provide independent and non-partisan, research support to Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) across party lines on all legislation and policy debates in the legislature
  • Track the functioning of legislatures and legislators by releasing detailed data and analysis
  • Devise means by which citizens are more aware and engaged in the policy making process.

The work of PRS was initiated with a grant from Ford Foundation, and subsequently by Google.org. Currently, the work of PRS is supported by a number of Indian institutions and individuals.

PRS gratefully acknowledges support from AV Venkatraman, Ajay Piramal, Amit Chandra, Avantha Foundation, Bharti and Sushil Ramola, India Value Fund Advisors, Jalaj Dani, Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation, Mahesh Krishnamurthy, Mahindra & Mahindra, Meher Pudumjee, Nemish Shah, Paresh Sukthankar, Pirojsha Godrej Foundation, Praveen Chakravarty, Puneet Dalmia, RK Damani, Rajiv Sahni, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, Rohini Nilekani, SK Shelgikar, Shasun Pharmaceuticals, Tata Sons and Vikram Lal.

2024 Internship Opportunities at PRS

PRS offers rolling internships throughout the year. The PRS staff consists of a team of dedicated professionals with different areas of expertise, and is broadly divided into the research and outreach departments.

While the research team analyses legislative and policy issues of topical interest, the outreach team tracks the working of the legislatures and legislators, manages citizen engagement and is PRS’s interface with the MPs and MLAs. A prospective intern can apply for an internship in either/ both departments.

Structure of the PRS internship

The internship varies from session to non-session time. During a Parliament session, PRS’s work is guided by the issues taken up in Parliament and interns are expected to work with the analysts on any and all projects. During non-session periods, the interests of the individual intern are taken into consideration, and he/she is matched with an analyst(s) doing related work.

The successful completion of a PRS internship requires the intern to pursue and complete an internship project.

The intern will be assisting analysts in their research, as well as undertaking an internship project.

The duration of the internship is flexible, but is normally between four and eight weeks.

We are presently accepting applications for one-month ‘Work from Home’ internships.

The internship period may be extended beyond one month on a case by case basis.

Interns can work from their home.

Please note that no accommodation or remuneration is provided. This is strictly an unpaid internship.

Expectations from interns

In addition to a deep interest in the working of Parliament and the legislative process in India, an intern should have:

  • Strong writing skills
  • Strong analytical skills
